The Fair Work Commission issued a decision on 24 November in the junior rates case which NANA highlighted in last week’s NANA Newsletter. The Commission’s decision will effectively remove junior rates from Retail Employee Levels 4 through to 8 under the General Retail Industry Award 2020. This will mean junior employees engaged in classifications covered by Retail Employee Levels 4 to 8 will be paid adult rates regardless of their age or experience. Any consequent wage rate adjustment will only apply to junior employees engaged at Retail Employee Level 4 or above. NANA’s observation is that there are few, if any junior employees engaged at Retail Employee Level 4 or above under the Award in Newsagencies in NSW and the ACT and that there are likely to be few employees and employers who will be caught up in the change.
