From Monday morning this week the media was abuzz with comments about possible changes to the General Retail Award 2020 based on an agreement reached between the SDA, AWU and the ACTU and MGA and COSBOA. Whilst those parties have reached an agreement, there is a long way to go until the Award is changed and even then any change may not be the same as what they have agreed. The proposal includes allowing individual agreements to increase the number of ordinary hours that part time employees can work, over and above those agreed at the time of their employment, without the payment of overtime. The proposed agreements will only relate to ordinary hours. Work in excess of the spread of hours on each day and more than 38 hours in a week will still attract overtime. Other penalty rates for weekend, public holiday, shift and late work will still apply. Log in to read more
